Here is a brief freewrite inspired by this painting: “Between the frames of life: May flowers grow from hearts and souls, wherever my poetry touches. May the ocean float the boat of hope, whenever you hear my songs.” Acrylic on canvas, 30×36 inches, 2025.

What does this painting say to you? Are the two figures the same person? While each viewer brings their own reading of an artwork, here is how I read this painting: (One figure said to another figure) “It is so not [that year] anymore, except in my dreams, you still are. I need this hour to be the very hour I was feeling alive then. I cannot keep up with life, if this marathon I am running, doesn’t run towards you.” This painting reminds me of the lines from two Tang Dynasty poems, 過盡千帆皆不是…. and 驀然回首,那人卻在,燈火闌珊處, (translation: None of the thousands of boats passed by was you… then I turned and found you at where the flickering lights were.) by poets 温庭筠 Wen Tingjun and 辛棄疾 Xin Qiji.
